LAMDA Exam Frequently Asked Questions

Congratulations on your child's upcoming LAMDA examination.

We know that exam day can feel exciting and sometimes a little nerve-wracking for both students and parents. We've put together this guide to answer some of the most common questions we receive.

---

What is LAMDA?

LAMDA (London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art) is one of the UK's most respected performing arts awarding organisations.

LAMDA qualifications help students develop confidence, communication skills, performance skills and public speaking abilities. They are recognised internationally and higher-level qualifications can even contribute UCAS points for university applications.

---

Is my child prepared for the exam?

Yes.

Students entered for a LAMDA examination have been recommended by their teacher because they are ready to take part.

Our students have been working towards their examinations throughout the academic year and have spent many months developing the skills, knowledge and performance pieces required for their exam.

While it is completely normal to feel nervous before an exam, students should feel reassured that they have been preparing for this moment throughout the year.

---

What will my child actually do in the exam?

The exact content depends on the qualification and grade being taken.

Students will usually:

  • Perform one or more prepared pieces

  • Respond to questions from the examiner

  • Demonstrate the communication, performance or acting skills they have developed in class

The examination is designed to be a positive and supportive experience and examiners are experienced in helping candidates feel comfortable.

---

How long does the exam last?

Exam lengths vary depending on the qualification being taken.

Most examinations last between 10 and 25 minutes.

Your child's examination confirmation email will provide further details where appropriate.

---

When will we find out the exam time?

LAMDA normally releases examination timetables approximately two weeks before the examination date.

As soon as Elizabeth Samuels Drama School receives the timetable, we will email the exact exam time directly to parents and carers.

---

What time should we arrive?

Please arrive 20 minutes before your child's scheduled examination time.

This allows time for registration and ensures the timetable can run smoothly.

Late arrivals may not be able to be accommodated by LAMDA.

---

What should my child wear?

Students should wear smart, comfortable clothing that helps them feel confident and professional.

School uniform is not required unless specifically stated.

Students should avoid clothing that may restrict movement or distract them during the examination.

---

Can parents watch the exam?

No.

LAMDA examinations are conducted privately between the student and examiner.

Parents and carers will normally be asked to wait outside the examination room.

---

What if my child is nervous?

Feeling nervous before an exam is completely normal.

LAMDA examiners are highly experienced and work hard to create a calm and welcoming environment for candidates.

Our teachers also spend time preparing students for the examination process itself, not just the content of the exam.

Many students leave their exam feeling proud of what they have achieved.

---

What happens if my child makes a mistake?

The examiner understands that students may occasionally forget a line, lose their place or become nervous.

Students are encouraged to stay calm and continue wherever possible.

One small mistake will not prevent a student from achieving an excellent result.

---

Will Elizabeth Samuels Drama School be there on the day?

For examinations taking place at one of our school venues, Elizabeth Samuels Drama School staff will be present to support with registration and organisation.

For examinations taking place at LAMDA's examination centre in Hammersmith, Elizabeth Samuels Drama School staff are unfortunately unable to attend as these are external examination sessions managed directly by LAMDA.

Students will be welcomed and supported by the LAMDA examinations team.

---

What happens if my child is unwell on the day?

If your child is unwell and unable to attend, please contact both Elizabeth Samuels Drama School and LAMDA as soon as possible.

Any decisions regarding transfers, refunds or alternative arrangements are made in accordance with LAMDA's examination policies.

---

When will we receive the results?

Results and certificates are usually received 6-8 weeks after the examination date.

As soon as we receive them from LAMDA, we will contact you with further information.

---

Can my child have additional preparation before the exam?

Yes.

We offer optional one-to-one LAMDA coaching sessions for students who would like some extra preparation, additional practice or a confidence boost before their examination.

These sessions can be tailored to the individual student and focus on performance skills, exam technique or any areas where they would like additional support.

Please contact us if you would like more information about booking a one-to-one session. We have a special discounted rate for one-to-one LAMDA exam prep for Elizabeth Samuels students.
